Gronau

Web design in Gronau, for businesses with customers on both sides of the border

Ten kilometres to Enschede. If you serve Dutch customers here and still run a German-only website, you are giving away the closest part of your market.

Gronau is the most densely populated town in the Borken district: around 50,000 residents on just under 79 square kilometres, roughly 640 per square kilometre against a district average of about 285. That is an inheritance of the textile industry, which drew people here from 1854 and ended with the insolvency of the van Delden group in 1980/81. For a business it means a compact catchment in which passing trade is a more realistic channel than in the spread-out municipalities around it.

The sharpest break, though, is not in the statistics but in the language. Enschede is ten kilometres away, two regional trains an hour cross the border, the Euregio has its office in Gronau - and the test is worth running: look at five competitors from Gronau and count how many offer their site in Dutch as well. Serving Dutch customers in German only means handing them a page in a foreign language and hoping they stay.

A second language version is no small thing, and we do not recommend it across the board. It costs translation, ongoing upkeep and a clean hreflang setup, and it only pays off if a measurable share of your revenue really comes from the Netherlands. We do that maths before the quote. If it comes out negative, we build a single-language site and tell you why.

Gronau in numbers

Population density
Around 50,000 residents on 78.8 km², roughly 640 per km² - more than twice the district average of about 285
Textile heritage
First mill in 1854, one of Europe's major textile centres until the 1920s; the end came in 1980/81 with the insolvency of the van Delden group
Economy today
Retail head offices instead of looms: K+K Klaas & Kock runs over 200 stores from Gronau, engbers more than 300 branches; alongside specialist machinery and the Urenco uranium enrichment plant
Cross-border ties
A municipal border shared with Enschede and Losser, ten kilometres to central Enschede; the RB 64 Euregio-Bahn and RB 51 cross hourly

Borken to Gronau is just under 60 kilometres and around 40 minutes. Gronau sits in the northern tip of the district, which makes it the longest drive we have within our own district. We are glad to come for meetings, but day-to-day coordination happens by video call, otherwise part of the budget goes into mileage instead of the site.

What makes the difference here

  • Businesses serving Dutch customers

Trades, retail and services that regularly sell across the border. A Dutch version here is not a prestige project but the difference between being found and being overlooked - provided the translation does not read like a machine.

  • Retail with branch networks

More branches are run from Gronau than its population would suggest. With many locations you need a structure that makes each one findable without producing hundreds of near-identical pages.

  • Specialist machinery

Niches like tracked aerial work platforms sell on technical evidence, and enquiries arrive in German, Dutch and English. A site that serves only one of those languages filters out part of the enquiries before they are even made.
