Web design in Ahaus, where the digital bar sits higher
Ahaus has spent years building a name as a digital town. That raises expectations of every website here - and makes it worth asking which part of your visibility you actually own.
In the 2024 Digitale Orte competition Ahaus was named Germany's smartest municipality out of 160 entrants, with more than a hundred digital services and a town app that bundles administration, retail and clubs. Two things follow for a business here. Customers are used to well-built digital routes and forgive a sluggish site less readily than elsewhere in the district. And part of your customer contact runs through a platform you do not own.
One company drives all of this: Tobit, founded in Ahaus in 1986, still based here, with a campus of around 20,000 square metres in the middle of town. When someone in a first conversation says they want something like Tobit has, we know what they mean. We also say that a web studio our size does not build a platform, it builds a website that does one thing well.
That makes the local supplier market denser than a town of 40,000 would suggest. In Ahaus we compete with people who have been selling software from here for decades, and rightly so: if you need custom software, they are the better address. We build the website in front of it. Which of the two questions you actually have is something we settle in the first conversation, not in the quote.
Ahaus in numbers
- Area
- At 151.24 km² the second-largest town in the district by area after Borken, with around 40,000 residents
- Digital town
- Named smartest municipality in the 2024 Digitale Orte competition out of 160 entrants, with more than a hundred digital services
- Economic profile
- Over 20,000 jobs subject to social insurance, a good four in ten of them in manufacturing; commercial land has been scarce for years
- Border location
- A direct municipal border with the Netherlands, neighbouring Haaksbergen and Enschede; motorway access via the A31
Borken to Ahaus is about 40 kilometres and a good half hour by car. That is further than the map suggests, because there is no through road between the two towns. Fine for meetings on site; too far for weekly rounds in person, which we hold by video call instead.
What makes the difference here
Manufacturing
A good four in ten jobs in Ahaus depend on production, often in owner-run suppliers selling across half of Europe. On their websites what counts is verifiability: materials, tolerances, certificates, named contacts with a direct line.
B2B Websites for Manufacturing 2026 - Specs Over SentimentSoftware and IT services
For its size, Ahaus has an unusual concentration of IT firms. Anyone selling software here is read by customers who have a basis for comparison, and has to explain the difference between an off-the-shelf product and a custom build on their own page.
Off-the-Shelf vs. Custom Web App: The Honest AnswerTown-centre retail and hospitality
A large share of local visibility in Ahaus runs through the town app and through Google rather than your own domain. Both are useful, and neither replaces a place where opening hours, menu and enquiries belong to you.
