SEO or GEO: where the next euro goes

Both share the same foundation. The table shows what still differs, and what should decide the weighting.

It is not either-or: GEO builds on the same technical and editorial foundation as SEO, without it there is no AI mention either. Where the next euro goes depends on where your customers actually search, in a classic results list or as a question to an AI system.

When each one fits

SEO

Visibility in the classic results list: ranking position, organic click, measurable traffic.

  • Your customers google specific search terms and compare results
  • You need solid numbers for reporting and budget decisions
  • Competition in your niche is not yet strong on Google
  • No technical SEO base exists yet: load time, structure, schema are missing

GEO

Visibility inside the AI answer itself: being named or cited as a source, rather than merely listed.

  • Your SEO base already stands: fast site, clean schema, clear structure
  • Your customers ask advice-heavy questions instead of typing single keywords
  • Competition inside AI answers is still thin in your industry
  • You want an early foothold before mentions settle in your niche

The honest answer

If your customers never search for providers online but find you through referral, foot traffic or a tender, you may need neither. That is the sentence that brings us no mandate, but it belongs here: the investment only pays off once part of your enquiries genuinely comes from a search, classic or AI-driven.

The reason many providers sell GEO as its own budget line is rarely the substance, it is that it justifies a new offer. In practice the extra effort for GEO is small once the SEO base is right: FAQ structure, schema.org, sourceable claims. Anyone without that base yet should spend the budget there first, rather than splitting it toward a field that carries nothing without a foundation anyway.
